How Can Online Marketers Use ChatGPT for SEO?

The possibilities in the field of AI seem endless at the moment. Especially now that AI has been made fully accessible to everyone with the help of ChatGPT. Every SEO marketer can benefit from it. But how?

Content creation

To begin with, ChatGPT can be very helpful in creating content. For this, you need a clear list of keywords. Of course, you can also use ChatGPT for this. Curious how? We have described “Conducting keyword research using ChatGPT” in another blog.

Once you have a clear overview of your most important keywords, ChatGPT can help find suitable topics, create content outlines, and come up with optimized titles and headings.

Let’s start with gathering inspiration for new topics. Enter the list of your most important keywords into ChatGPT and ask the bot to sort these in a table based on search volume. Then type this prompt: ‘Based on this table, provide five relevant blog topics’. In this example, we are using a website that targets an audience looking to travel on a budget.

To create an outline for your blog, use this prompt: ‘Create an article outline for: blog topic with keyword-rich titles and headings. Only include H1, H2, and H3 tags in the outline.’

As you can see, ChatGPT gives you a ready-made outline so you can start writing your article. Curious about what meta title/description ChatGPT would recommend for the article? Then use this prompt: ‘Now write a meta title and description for the article. The title should be a maximum of 60 characters long and the description a maximum of 160 characters.’

If you want to share the article on your social media channels, ChatGPT can also be a good source of inspiration: ‘Provide ideas for social media posts that fit well with this article.’

Competitive Analysis

It’s of course very important to keep a close eye on your competitors and stay up-to-date. This can be a time-consuming process, but fortunately, there’s also a good, extensive ChatGPT prompt to make the process a bit easier.

The following prompt is very extensive and will therefore elicit a fairly long response from the chatbot. Keep in mind that ChatGPT’s server is often busy/overloaded and that such extensive requests may take longer or might give an error at the moment. Not everything in ChatGPT’s report will be equally useful/relevant, but it’s often a good start for your own more comprehensive analysis.

Prompt:

‘I want you to act as an analyst/auditor. I want you to conduct an analysis of brand with the following competitors: competitors. I want you to assess the differences and similarities between brand and competitors. I want you to focus on pricing, market positioning, and branding. Research the relevant market and analyze each brand to identify key differences and similarities. Present all information in a detailed report with graphs, charts, and tables. Based on all the information, let me know how brand can improve and take actionable steps to make brand better than competitors.’

In this example, we have used several well-known clothing brands.

Link Building

Do you want to get started with link building but have no idea where to begin? ChatGPT can already help you a long way. With the right prompts, you can find out which websites you can collaborate with to improve your authority and rank higher in search engines.

Try this prompt, for example: ‘Analyze this website: website. Provide a list of specific websites that website can collaborate with to increase the number of backlinks to website.’

For this example, we used our own website.

General SEO Analysis

Don’t feel like/have time to try many different prompts and just want ChatGPT to perform a quick, global SEO analysis? Then try this prompt:

‘I want you to act as the best SEO consultant of all time. I need a list of keywords and a corresponding targeting strategy to optimize website. Then choose the appropriate keywords to focus on. Consider the competition and search volume for each keyword. I want to rank organically in first place in search engines and need this list and strategy to achieve that. I want you to develop a strategy that best incorporates the chosen keywords to maximize the potential to rank website higher in search results. Also incorporate keyword difficulty here and rank them based on those that are easiest. Show the results in a table format.’

What are the Disadvantages of ChatGPT for SEO?

So ChatGPT can be very useful in many different ways when it comes to SEO. But of course, there are also a few disadvantages to the tool that are good to keep in mind if you plan to use ChatGPT.

To begin with, ChatGPT only uses and learns from information available on the internet. This means that answers can be inconsistent and biased. That’s why it’s very important to thoroughly read and check/adjust all output from ChatGPT. Never copy texts blindly.

The second disadvantage of ChatGPT is the chatbot’s inability to understand/convey emotions. AI currently cannot empathize with the emotions of a target audience and therefore will not be able to write/create with empathy. This limits its ability to create content that evokes strong emotional responses.

And finally, you need to consider limited access to the chatbot. The test version of ChatGPT is currently freely available to everyone, but there’s a good chance this won’t remain the case for long. OpenAI’s current goal is to train the bot as well as possible and make it as efficient as possible. Maybe all the disadvantages we just mentioned will soon disappear and ChatGPT will function fully as a (bizarrely intelligent) colleague!
